Welcome to 2018!

We hope you have all had a relaxing break and enjoyed the Christmas and New Year festivities. Our team certainly made the most of the break, with many of us taking the time to appreciate our fabulous Aussie weather and beaches. Some of us even made it to a few cricket matches with our families…it is terrific to see just how much the BBL and WBBL have totally changed the face of cricket over recent years. The match day experience has engaged a whole new audience and their approach has demonstrated the impact a bold new idea and format can have on one of our most traditional sports.

But it is not just cricket, or sports that are having to adapt to changing trends.

Earlier this month we published a blog written by Heath Colebatch on the way population growth is changing the game for infrastructure across the globe. As the BRS team works across Australasia we are seeing the impact of these changes in our clients, their people and their projects. Here is a summary of the key trends we are observing:

  • Changing technology in how people will source energy for their home and motor vehicles;
  • Increasing costs of building infrastructure in land constrained cities such as Auckland, Sydney and Melbourne is driving a greater focus on a multi-modal approach and use of SMART motorway technology and practices;
  • Higher pressure on government to deliver more projects more quickly is resulting in a shift away from construct only procurement, to a shift back towards Alliancing and Early Contractor involvement and other collaborative procurement models;
  • A greater focus on our customers and their experience in ensuring a system approach to delivering on their expectations;
  • Increased focus on stakeholder engagement during development, design and construction phases to ensure that there is a strong focus on our customers;
  • Shifting of expectations and responsibilities to designers and constructors with a view they take on greater risk allocation around stakeholder engagement, traffic disruption, and program management;
  • Increased focus on using infrastructure to shape communities in terms of how people live, work and play; and
  • Greater need for collaboration between the supply chain and government in terms of solving problems, building capability and capacity in our industry and resourcing projects.

What this means is that the shift in our industry is increasingly demanding leaders who are not only competent technical specialists and engineers, but also leaders who are collaborative, understand stakeholders, have exceptional leadership skills, have strong commercial acumen, and who embrace new ideas and technology.  This shift is happening.  The challenge for all of us is how we respond to this and capitalise on the opportunities this presents.


A Game Changing Year in 2018

Earlier this month we launched our Game Changers in Infrastructure group coaching program, specifically designed for leaders in infrastructure across Australasia. Our team at BRS are very excited about this program as we believe it will transform our industry by building the capability and capacity of our leaders across our projects, organisations and client businesses to deliver better infrastructure and meet the challenges mentioned above over the next five years.

What does the Game Changers in Infrastructure program involve?

  • Your four quarterly two day workshops with your coach (Kym Williams) and a community of like-minded peers will be given a rare opportunity to get outside the day-to-day of your business
  • You will go through a 360-degree leadership effectiveness assessment on where you are at as a leader and where you want to be
  • We will assist you in developing an personal action plan that will be reviewed quarterly to ensure you deliver on these actions
  • Between the workshops you will have access to a dedicated Program Advisor, an expert at helping infrastructure leaders implement the tools and concepts of the Program in their lives, organisations and projects
  • Each month you will be provided with the opportunity to listen in on our Game Changers in Infrastructure calls to help you and your team remain clear, focused and confident throughout the year
