We now go through this presentation with every new starter in the business and it’s a great way to introduce them to the business but more importantly for everyone in the team to understand the rationale behind what we do and how we do it. It also links to our six pillars in our business which are the foundations upon which our organisations works in a sustainable manner.
I want to share with you some of the advantages of having a presentation like this one in place for your own organisation or project:
Give access to critical information:
We can spend months and years working for the same company and sometimes we don’t even know what the company’s strategic plan or business plan is. What is your organisation’s strategy for the next three or five years? And next year’s objectives? Is your company looking at expanding the business to other countries? What targets and measures are in place to measure success?
Making this information available to your employees will not only make them feel that they are part of a bigger project but also but also give them a sense of accessibility, transparency and clarity that will help to build relationships based on trust and empower them to deliver to the plan.
See the link between some key processes in your business and the bigger picture
All businesses have different forms, policies, plans, templates, guides, etc. that were created with a different purpose and for different things. We know how important these are on our day to day activities, but often we don’t really understand the link between them. For example, do you see the link and the flow between your vision and values and your marketing plan? Let me show you something to illustrate the possible connections and how they show the bigger picture:
A visual as simple as the one above, will show the flow between key documents on your business. And if you want people to remember it, use visuals: the majority of scientific and education researchers agree that about 75 percent of your learning is through your vision. We remember and can relate to images. We forget words.
We have the exact same thing for our approach and our tools. And when opening it from our server, if you click on each on these names it takes you to the actual document to check it out and understand and apply it at a deep level!
Be able to understand what other people in your business do
In all businesses, the people in our team do different things and are involved in different parts of the business: I have colleagues that write proposals, colleagues that do most of the Business Development, colleagues that do client work, colleagues that are responsible for the finances, others provide administration support, and we can go on and on. Unconsciously, we can start working in silos…too focused on what we are doing that we don’t know what others in the business do and more importantly, we don’t value the relevance of what they do.
For this reason, this presentation shows the link between our six pillars:

This gives a good background about what people in the different parts of the business do and why all these parts are important and need to come together. An example is that you may deliver a great job, but if you don’t charge your client for your work, if you don’t have the invoice ready to go on time and, if necessary, chase the client to get paid, the business won’t be able to pay their own expenses (including your salary!).
And understanding this bigger picture is critical to understand that everyone’s effort is important to get something done, and that communication and collaboration across the different areas is necessary.
Connecting the dots in your business and showing to your employees not only the what, but also the how, who and why of what you do is definitely one of the secrets of a winning and constructive culture that has benefits for both the employee and employer. The employer will have higher levels of engagement, understanding and commitment from the team and the employees will be more conscious of the fact that everyone in the team is important and that they are part of an exciting bigger project that needs their effort, work and collaboration to be a success.
